Of all the hazards on a job site, the most dangerous are often the ones you can't see. Microscopic silica dust, chemical vapors, and airborne biological particulates can cause severe, long-term lung damage before a worker even realizes they are exposed.

Selecting the right respiratory protection is critical, but the alphabet soup of ratings—N95, P100, OV cartridges—can be confusing. Whether you are sanding drywall or spraying industrial solvents, here is everything you need to know to decipher respirator classifications and keep your crew's lungs safe.

1. Decoding the Letters: Oil Resistance (N, R, P)

When dealing with particulate filters (which protect against dust, mists, and fumes), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses a three-letter system to indicate how the filter reacts to oil-based aerosols.

  • N (Not Resistant to Oil): These filters offer zero protection against oil. They are strictly for environments with non-oil-based particulates, such as woodworking dust, coal, silica, and biological aerosols.

  • R (Resistant to Oil): These filters provide short-term protection against oil-based aerosols. They are typically rated for a single shift (up to 8 hours) of use before they must be discarded.

  • P (Oil Proof): These filters are strongly resistant to oil and are designed for prolonged exposure in environments where heavy oil mists or lubricants are present in the air.

2. Decoding the Numbers: Filtration Efficiency (95, 99, 100)

The number that follows the letter tells you exactly how much airborne particulate the filter is guaranteed to block (specifically measuring particles down to 0.3 microns in size).

  • 95: Filters out at least 95% of airborne particles. (e.g., N95)

  • 99: Filters out at least 99% of airborne particles.

  • 100: Filters out at least 99.97% of airborne particles. This is the equivalent of a HEPA filter and provides the highest level of particulate protection available. (e.g., P100)

Buyer's Tip: If your crew is doing heavy industrial work, asbestos removal, or lead abatement, a P100 filter is the gold standard.

3. Particulates vs. Gases and Vapors

In Canada, simply handing a worker a respirator isn't enough. Under the CSA Z94.4 standard for the selection, use, and care of respirators, any tight-fitting mask (from a disposable N95 to a reusable full-facepiece) requires a formal fit test.

A respirator only works if it creates a perfect seal against the skin. This means the worker must be clean-shaven where the mask touches the face—even a few days of stubble can break the seal and allow toxins into the lungs.
